The effects of vaping on sleep

You’ve heard it all before, to stay healthy you need to eat a healthy diet, exercise and get a good seven hours sleep, at least! 

For some, meeting the sleep quota is more difficult to achieve, especially if you work shifts, have a newborn and being stressed are some of the most popular sleep stealers. 

But what if none of these apply and you’re still struggling catch those ZZZ’s? We have taken a look at whether vaping has an effect on sleeping. 

 Is stronger, better? 

Let’s dive straight in. Does your E-Liquid contain nicotine? If you answered yes, then there is a high probability that this is not only harming the quality of your sleep, but how much you get too. 

Nicotine is a stimulant, much like tea and coffee as oppose to the old adage that it’s a relaxant. The higher the strength of nicotine in your liquid, the more awake and alert you are, therefore having a significant effect on your sleep. 

Some people are aware of the stimulating effects of nicotine, using it to mask their exhaustion or to wake them up a bit in the morning in place of a strong coffee. 

How does Nicotine actually effect my sleep? 

Here’s the science bit – nicotine not only acts as a stimulant by increasing your heart rate, if you have a vape before bed using a high strength nicotine E-Liquid, chances are you will not achieve a deep sleep, also known as REM or Rapid Eye Movement.  

It’s when you’re in REM that your sleep is at its deepest and is when your body gets the most rest and recovery. This is stage three of the sleep cycle. 

If you are vaping nicotine before you turn you’re most likely to remain in stages 1-2, where your sleep is fairly light and you’re easily awoken, making you more tired the next day. 

What can I do to help myself? 

There are a few ways to ensure you get restful sleep and continue to vape and do all the things you enjoy without feeling fatigued from last of sleep. 

Cut the nicotine  

If you like a particular strength during the day, maybe try something lower in the evenings or when you get home after work – at least four hours before you go to bed.

Reduce Caffeine intake 

It goes without saying that cutting other stimulants out in the evenings will also help. This includes tea, coffee and some carbonated drinks like cola and energy drinks.  

Try a wind down routine 

Look at ways to prepare your mind and body for rest and sleep by making a few small changes. 

A warm bath, relaxing essential oils and reading are all calming and can help you unwind. It’s also a good idea to try not to look at your phone or a device at least two hours before you go to bed to avoid the strain of the light on your eyes and can often lead to a poor sleep ahead.
